The City has had some feedback from some residents that we need to do more on our verges. We have listened and we are now asking everyone what they think about verges.

Verge maintenance currently consists of weed control and grass slashing to remove pest plants and reduce fuel loading by cutting grass to a height of 80 millimetres. This service is undertaken once or twice per year.

In addition to seeking feedback on its verge maintenance service, the City is seeking ideas from the community on potential verge enhancement initiatives.

CEO Rhonda Hardy said “Generally, verge maintenance is undertaken for very practical purposes. Which is to ensure that the verge, the strip of land between the road and your letterbox, is clear from any obstruction for both pedestrians and motorists”. “The City is providing the opportunity for everyone to consider verge enhancement initiatives in collaboration with the community and households”.

“One example could be verge adoption, where a household can individually, or even in collaboration with their neighbours, adopt a verge and convert it into a water wise garden”. “Water wise native verge gardens can enhance the amenity of one’s home, as well as provide a valuable biodiversity corridor for our local fauna. The City already supports the establishment of native gardens through its annual Free Plants for Residents initiatives which has a lot of uptake from the community.”
