The City of Kalamunda have awarded the Local Hero Awards to three deserving community members in recognition for their contribution to local sporting communities and keeping the High Wycombe community litter free.

Community Local Hero Awards have been presented to Craig and Sharon McCarthy, well-known coaches at the Kalamunda United Football Club in Maida Vale. Craig and Sharon coach three (3) teams of all abilities, and provide, at their own cost, chips and gravy every Thursday night for their teams during the season. They have been recognised for being proponents for inclusion in the community and also providing valuable social connection opportunities for young people.

Robert Robbs received the award for being a champion for keeping the High Wycombe community. In his spare time, Robert keeps High Wycombe litter free by picking up rubbish and debris from the verges and paths and reporting illegal dumping incidents.

Mayor Margaret Thomas said this demonstrates how meaningful the efforts of a single person can be “In volunteering their spare time working with the local sporting community and keeping our environment litter free, these individuals truly embody the community spirit of active, connected community citizens”.

“Craig, Sharon and Robert are outstanding individuals who through their actions continue to act selflessly in their endeavours and strive for an inclusive, happy and safe community”.

“They should be so proud of their achievements, and I ask the community to join me in congratulating their valuable contribution and celebrate their successes”.

The monthly Local Hero Award is a celebration of the people within our community who are passionate about making a difference, freely volunteering to help and protect our community. There are three categories up for nomination: Local Hero of the Month, Senior Community Member and Young Local Hero. Winners are picked monthly and winners are awarded with a $50 gift voucher as a small token of appreciation.

Local Hero Awards run monthly and the City accepts nominations throughout the year. Community members are invited to nominate online at engage.kalamunda.wa.gov.au/local-heros

The monthly awards culminate at the Annual Thank a Volunteer Ceremony, at which the Local Hero of the Year Awards will be presented. Nominate your Local Hero today at engage.kalamunda.wa.gov.au/local-heros
