2021 Commemorative Planting Day Registrations Open

07 April 2021 12:45 PM

The City of Kalamunda has opened registrations for its 2021 Commemorative Planting Day to recognise the community’s newest residents.

Running annually since 1998, the commemorative days have resulted in thousands of trees and shrubs being planted throughout the City.

Mayor Margaret Thomas said this year’s event will celebrate babies born between May 2020 and April 2021 to parents living in the City.

“Families are invited to register to take part in the community planting day on Friday 9 July 2021 at a local park or reserve where a plaque displaying all baby names will be installed,” Cr Thomas said.

“Families will also receive a personalised certificate for their child/ren and a plant to take home.”

Registrations close 5pm, Friday 28 May 2021.

Online applications can be submitted via engage.kalamunda.wa.gov.au.

The tree planting ceremony became an annual event in 1988, the City’s Bicentennial year, when it was decided to add to the forest and mark its new residents by planting a tree for each baby born that year. The babies of the first plantings now being young adults and the planted saplings now mature trees providing much shade and enjoyment at reserves throughout the region. These days a community planting takes place, along with a tree being selected and taken home by families for their own property as well.
