City asks for feedback on Discounts

03 December 2021 5:00 PM

The City of Kalamunda is seeking community feedback on the current discounts that are provided for eligible customers regarding their Annual Waste Charges.

Mayor Margaret Thomas JP said, “Waste is one of the highest costs that Councils manage each year, and the City ensures the service is financially viable and provides the best service to residents and ratepayers.”

“The City offers discounts for eligible customers, and is reaching out to check in with community and see if we have the subsidies right to support ratepayers in the district.”

“The City has already implemented infrastructure upgrades to the Walliston Transfer Station to better manage the City’s waste, recycle waste materials, reduce the impact on the environment, and are re-examining fees and charges to ensure they are equitable and affordable to all residences.”

“We know that receiving the Rates and Waste bill can be a challenging time for some of our more financially vulnerable community members and we want to make certain we have the right support strategies in place before the 2022/23 Rates season,” said Cr Thomas.

The City has a separate, easily identifiable waste management charge to encourage waste minimisation. This charge is levied for each property’s rubbish service for the year and provides pensioners with a discount on waste charges.

The fees cover weekly household rubbish pick-up/disposal, fortnightly recycling pick-up/processing, and an on-request service skip bin service*. Ratepayers (with an Entry Pass) have unlimited entries to dispose green waste, agreed recyclable materials and four (4) general, non-commercial waste entries at Walliston Transfer Station. Additionally, fees go towards keeping the City clean with emptying of public bins, sweeping streets, collecting litter and removing illegally dumped waste.

Feedback will be used to inform future Annual Waste Charges.
