Public Notice: Rubbish truck fire incident
On Monday 26 February during a routine bin collection of general waste, smoke was detected inside a rubbish truck.
The waste contractor stopped the truck and discovered that the inside contents had ignited a fire.
For safety reasons and to avoid vehicle combustion, the load of general waste inside the truck needed to be emptied so the fire could be extinguished.
Investigations by the waste contractor are still underway, but early signs indicate a lawnmower with fuel inside may have caused the fire.
Disposing of hazardous waste in your general waste bin is not only bad for the environment but also a safety hazard. Incorrect disposal can lead to pollution, safety risk for workers and even cause fires.
The following is not accepted in your general waste bin:
- Batteries
- Petrol
- Aerosols
- Chemical waste, paints or motor oil
- electronic waste
Selected household hazardous waste can be safely disposed of at our Walliston Transfer station.
